Cloud Computing for Renewable Energy Utilities: Benefits, Lessons Learned, and What’s Next?
Renewable energy is very geographically dispersed – wind blows in certain areas of the country and not in others so you’ll find wind turbines in many remote and scattered locations. Similar challenges arise with solar and sun patterns can vary from one part of the country to another. In most cases, people don’t live near renewable energy sources, wind is more common but solar tends to be much more remote leading to an increased need for remote computing, cloud computing and the SaaS model. In these remote locations, remote connectivity is a must.

Speed is a key advantage when dealing with renewable energy – with companies going through massive transitions and quickly buying and selling these assets, some organizations need a mere 90 days to set up and take over an asset and cloud computing allows for a much easier transition.
Another key benefit of cloud computing within the renewable energy space is the significantly reduced cost of managing these assets – cloud computing allows for a more streamlined management process without too much overhead or lengthy and costly maintenance needs.

Lessons learned
Primarily it’s about training the end-users. New assets oftentimes require new people. People who haven’t used the systems before need to be trained on how to maximize the system and how it will benefit them and their overall department.

What’s Next
IoT – wind and solar renewables lend themselves to IoT as well. All the assets have the ability to communicate and have connections capable of telling you info about their condition which makes remote management and lends itself to a lot of efficiencies by collecting data remotely and aggregating it into a consistent plan to assist with managing.

Stevan Bernard’s passion for security and his wealth of experience across diverse industries operating in more than 50 countries will help answer a critical question for all companies: when the breach happens, what decisions will you wish you had made?

Investments in prevention and an emphasis on cyber hygiene are important, but not nearly sufficient to ensure recovery and long-term resilience. Fort Collins is Starting to Deliver Non-Traditional Utility Services with a CIS Cloud Solution
According to the 2015 federal direction “Access to high – speed broadband is no longer a luxury; it is a necessity for American families, businesses and consumers.”

In today’s hyperconnected age, municipalities have identified that keeping the population connected is a ubiquitous service and falls under the category of basic utility (water and power) needs for a community. With this idea in mind, The City of Fort Collins asked its voters whether a city-wide broadband service was needed. After the vote was finalized The City embarked on a journey to become a Gigabit City.

The City needed to evaluate whether it should add to its existing IT infrastructure a solution that was able to manage these new services separate from its legacy system or get a new multiservice solution with an infrastructure that could scale seamlessly.

This session will discuss The City of Fort Collins's journey from technology selection through the implementation process.

VertexOne as the Catalyst for DC Water's Migration to the Cloud
DC Water’s journey to the cloud began in December with the launch of Project Triton. Project Triton was to replace DC Water’s 20+ year-old Customer Information System with a state of the art, cloud-based CIS. DC Water selected VertexOne as its platform of choice with an extremely aggressive 12-month implementation timeline. In addition to replacing the core CIS, Project Triton included the replacement of our mobile work management platform with a cloud-based solution KONA from the Confluence Group for processing all customer-facing work orders. Additionally, DC Water replaced its antiquated customer portal and deployed its first mobile customer solution. Lastly, the bill payment and presentment platform were also upgraded. On December 11th, 2017 DC Water successfully deployed its new solution and was recognized in April 2019 as the Best Large CIS implementation by CS Week.

Project Triton was the first major system implementation as part of our “Cloud First Strategy” generating substantial benefits both direct and indirect which confirmed its strategy and solidifying the foundation for its enterprise-wide cloud transformation. As part of its cloud migration DC Water has developed and deployed a 3rdparty portal to allow non DC Water employees to conduct business electronically in the cloud. Migrated its work and asset management systems, Maximo and ArcGIS to the cloud are currently upgrading its construction management solutions and call accounting systems to the cloud and our new cloud-based Customer Experience ERP and Human Capital Management solutions. Lastly, we are deploying PowerBI on Azure as part of our predictive analytics, machine learning, reporting, and decision support strategy.

Learn about this new IT Paradigm in the Cloud and how it is changing the way IT works at DC Water.
